Microsoft Paint app axed in favor of the classic version

End of the road for Paint 3D

Paint 3D, presented as the modernized successor to Microsoft Paint, will no longer be available in the Microsoft Store or receive updates starting November 4, 2024. Built with a focus on 3D modeling, the app also introduced features like layers, transparency effects, and background removal. However, users showed a preference for the classic Paint app due to its simplicity, ease of use, and faster launch speed.

The resurgence of the classic Paint

In 2023, Microsoft revamped the classic Paint app with upgrades such as layers, transparency, and auto background removal. Additionally, the app received the Cocreator feature for Microsoft Copilot users, enhancing its capabilities. With these updates, it became clear that Paint 3D was being left behind. Recognizing this, Microsoft decided to merge the most popular features of Paint 3D with the classic Paint and discontinue the newer version.

The enduring appeal of Microsoft Paint

Despite being launched in 1985, Microsoft Paint remains popular among users for its simplicity, ease of use, and nostalgic value. While it may not offer the advanced features of tools like GIMP or Adobe Photoshop, its availability and functionality as a free, bundled app in Windows make it an essential part of the Microsoft ecosystem. For many users, Windows wouldn’t be the same without Microsoft Paint.
