Apple Intelligence Features Coming to iPhones in the Next Update

Starting next month, users of compatible iPhones will be able to test the beta release of Apple Intelligence features, which will become public as part of the expected iOS 18.1 update. Unless they live in the EU or China – Apple confirmed the initial reports that none of the new AI features will be available in those regions – at least not this year.

Device Compatibility and Requirements

Only the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max from the older models are supported, but all new models (iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max) are compatible. You will need iOS 18.1, at least 4GB of available storage and setting the device and Siri language to a supported language.

Language Support

At first, only US English will be supported, but other regional English variants will be added in December. Next year, the language selection will expand to support Chinese, French, Japanese and Spanish.

Region Limitations

EU users can find a workaround to get Apple Intelligence to work by setting their AppleID region to a supported one like the US. However, this comes with implications such as losing access to regional apps and services.

Apple Intelligence won’t work on any iPhones bought in mainland China. Even for phones bought elsewhere, Apple Intelligence will not work while they are in mainland China or if your Apple ID region is set to mainland China.

Regulatory Hurdles

Regulation, specifically the Digital Markets Act (DMA), is holding back the availability of Apple Intelligence in the EU. Apple is working to ensure compliance with strict rules about fair competition and transparency due to the large number of consumers using its products and services.

CNBC reported that Apple is holding back iPhone Mirroring and enhancements to SharePlay for EU consumers due to concerns over DMA rules.

Features of Apple Intelligence in iOS 18.1

Apple Intelligence in iOS 18.1 will support features like Writing Tools, Clean Up in Photos, Natural language search in Photos, Notification summaries, Siri enhancements, and more. These features may not be available on iPhones in the EU and China.
