Apple’s iPhone 16 Series Banned in Indonesia due to Investment Requirement

The iPhone 16 series has been available worldwide for a few weeks now. However, it seems that Apple has hit a roadblock in the Southeast Asian market, particularly in Indonesia. The Indonesian government has banned the sales of the iPhone 16 series due to Apple’s failure to meet local investment requirements.

For certain product categories, Indonesia requires manufacturers to have at least 40% of “domestic content.” In Apple’s case, they chose to invest in local sourcing, infrastructure, and other areas rather than setting up factories in the country.

Investment Requirement and Ban

The Indonesian government had set a requirement for Apple to invest at least 1.71 trillion rupiah ($109 million) in total. However, Apple’s investment fell short at 1.48 trillion rupiah ($94 million), leaving a deficit of around $15 million. As a result, the iPhone 16 sales have been banned in Indonesia as Apple did not comply with the necessary investment amount.

Apple’s investments in Indonesia are directed towards software developer academies and other areas to meet the local requirements. Despite these efforts, the necessary license to sell iPhone 16 series in the country was denied by the local government.

Impact and Comparison with Other Brands

Interestingly, other smartphone brands like Samsung and Xiaomi have set up factories in Indonesia to comply with the local investment requirements. The lack of popularity of iPhones in Indonesia may be a reason why Apple has not established factories in the country.

According to Bloomberg, iPhones do not rank among the top six smartphone brands in Indonesia, making it less lucrative for Apple to invest in factories. However, there have been reports indicating that Apple was considering establishing factories in Indonesia in the future.

Remaining Devices and Resolution

Indonesian representatives estimate that there are approximately 9,000 units of the iPhone 16 series in the country, possibly imported through various channels. While the government will not ban the use of these devices, it will prohibit their resale.

It remains to be seen whether Apple will reach an agreement with the Indonesian government to resolve the issue and potentially resume sales of the iPhone 16 series in the near future.
