Capcom’s Latest Game: Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess

While Monster Hunter Wilds is set for release next year, Capcom has another exciting game coming out soon. Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess caught our attention with its impressive trailer at Summer Game Fest 2024, and after playing it firsthand, we are even more excited. This action strategy game offers a unique gameplay experience where players must free mountain villages from a sinister force known as the “Defilement” by strategically placing villagers and engaging in combat with the enemy forces, the “Seethe”.

Gameplay and Mechanics

Imagine an isometric Onimusha with tower defense elements. Players must strategically manage and position villagers to protect the mystical maiden and eliminate the defilement that has plagued the mountain. Despite its complexity, Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess quickly became one of our favorite games at Summer Game Fest Play Days. After speaking with the development team, we are confident that this game will offer a truly special experience upon its release next month.

Game Design and Levels

Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess is structured in levels where players must escort the maiden from one end of the level to the other while defending her from threats. Capcom used miniatures to design these levels, aiming for a more immersive and realistic experience for players, giving them a bird’s eye view of the action from an isometric perspective. Throughout the day, players can explore the level, clear out the defilement, and free villagers to earn currency which can be used in various ways.

Combat and Strategy

At night, hordes of Seethe emerge from the defiled Torii gates, requiring players to strategically position villagers and engaged in combat to protect the village. By using a combination of tactics and abilities, players must fend off the enemies while ensuring the maiden’s safety. With each day-night cycle, the gameplay evolves, introducing new challenges, roles, and abilities for players to master.

Unique Gameplay and Storytelling

Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess offers a fresh and distinctive gameplay experience that incorporates elements of Japanese culture and folklore. The emphasis on dancing to purify the gate and the minimalistic storytelling approach add depth to the game’s narrative, inviting players to interpret the story and characters in their own way. With its bold and innovative design, this game promises to deliver a memorable and engaging experience for players.

Capcom’s Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess is scheduled for release on July 19 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, with availability on Xbox Game Pass from launch day.
