Bonfires in Dark Souls: the Heart of Progress

Year three, at least, and we continue to play Dark Souls very slowly. Sometimes we play in frantic bursts, while at other times we let it lie for months with no progress at all. Early on, deep in a dungeon that looks like the inside of someone’s ear, about to fight a spidery boss, we realize that bonfires are crucial to our progress.

**Bonfires** in Dark Souls are fascinating. In a game filled with incredibly good ideas, they may be our favorite. They provide a base to return to, a network of bases scattered throughout the deadly environment. They allow us to navigate the game’s rugged cliff face, always feeling like we’re making progress but simultaneously aware of the danger.

The way the environment interlocks, the trails that lead you far enough to bring you back facing in the other direction, is magic. Bonfires are at the heart of that system, providing clear junction points in a game full of loops and tangles.

The Importance of Bonfires in Dark Souls

It’s weird how much Dark Souls feels at home on the Switch. Bonfires famously reset the world and all the monsters in it, providing a moment of rest and reflection for the player. While it may seem like they undo all the progress made, they ultimately contribute to the immersive world-building of the game.

One of the things that fascinates us about Dark Souls is how the audience invests in the lore and the world as real, tangible places. Bonfires encourage this investment, offering a moment of respite in a world filled with danger and beauty.

The Cosmical Significance of Bonfires

As we alternate between Dark Souls and Elden Ring, we realize the cosmic importance of bonfires in these games. They serve as sites of grace, allowing players to feel a sense of ownership and belonging in a world that is both horrible and beautiful. The world-building in FromSoftware’s games, combined with the presence of bonfires, creates a unique and immersive experience for players.
